The name of this dog comes from the French word for “butterfly,” and was given because of the way that the breed’s ears resemble a butterfly. It is one of the oldest breeds of toy spaniel, and appears in paintings from Italy as early as 1500. A variation of the breed, the Phalène (from the French word for “moth”), has dropped ears, but is still considered a type of Papillon. In fact, they can be born in the same litter! If socialized properly, the Papillon gets along well with other creatures, as they do not have a tendency toward aggression and can be easily trained.
