    Description

Peabody Essex Museum Replica NETSUKE WASHER WOMAN, Hand Carved Resin, Wood Stand
This lovely Netsuke replica was purchased 40 years ago in the late 1970’s and is now retired. It comes from the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts and is made of hand carved resin. The figure depicts a Washer Woman stirring the wash in a wooden barrel and holding a scrub brush in her right hand. The Netsuke is approximately 1 1/2" tall, 1 1/8” wide and 1 3/4" deep and rests upon its own wooden stand.
The traditional Japanese kimonos did not have pockets, and Netsuke were devised as a means to secure pouches to carry personal items. While created as a practical devise to fill a need for over 300 years, Netsukes evolved into a unique form of miniature sculptures.
